Scuba Diving tour at Caño Island

Caño Island is a small island about 20 km from Drake Bay, Costa Rica, that is about 300 hectares (3 km²) in size. It is located in the Pacific Ocean portion of Costa Rica, west of the Osa Peninsula. It was declared a national park and protected area, with a permanent ranger station on the island. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors for its beaches, coral banks, and marine life. Researchers currently use coral beds to study the factors surrounding coral death and the recolonization process. Marine life includes rays, dolphins, sea turtles, whales, and a variety of fish. However, the limited diversity of terrestrial fauna is notable, as the island has less than one percent of the insect diversity of the peninsula and highlights the absence of numerous animals native to the nearby mainland. Evidence of pre-Columbian human activity on the island is substantial, with some interesting artifacts such as carved stone spheres, evidently made by the early civilizations that inhabited these territories.
